Llanera, Asturias: municipality guide
Llanera is a municipality in central Asturias, on the plain that stretches north of Oviedo. Its capital is Posada de Llanera. With 14,020 inhabitants and 106.69 km², it is a municipality of strong residential and industrial growth, home to the Silvota and Asipo industrial estates and the Asturias Technology Park.
Things to see in Llanera
The terrain is predominantly flat, devoted to pasture and cattle farming, with small elevations such as Pico Gorfolí (582 m, the highest point), Peña Menende, Pico del Águila and Santo Firme. The river Nora, the most important in the municipality, separates it from Oviedo; the altitude ranges from 120 metres on its banks to 582 at Gorfolí. The municipality is divided into 11 parishes and its main settlements are Posada, Lugo de Llanera, Villabona, Pruvia and San Cucao.
The Roman past left in Llanera the settlement of Lucus Asturum, a communications hub in ancient times. Among the religious heritage stand out the Romanesque church of Santiago de Arlós (a listed Historic-Artistic Monument), the church of San Miguel de Villardeveyo, the baroque palace of Villanueva in San Cucao (17th century, a listed Cultural Heritage Site), the Valdés tower and the chapel of Santa Bárbara. As unique facilities, the La Morgal airfield —with an 890-metre runway and a heliport for the Emergency Service—, the «Fernando Alonso» karting circuit with its museum dedicated to the driver, and the La Morgal golf course.

The economy of Llanera revolves around services and industry: the Silvota and Asipo estates, Mercasturias and the Asturias Technology Park concentrate a great deal of activity, while the service sector —trade, hospitality and transport— employs most of its inhabitants. Renfe has stations in Lugo de Llanera, Villabona and Ferroñes.

How to get there
The A-66 motorway (Ruta de la Plata) and the AS-II Industrial Motorway connect Llanera with Gijón and Oviedo; the AS-17 links with Avilés and Langreo, and the AS-233 with Corvera de Asturias and Las Regueras. Renfe has stations in Lugo de Llanera, Villabona and Ferroñes. Posada de Llanera is 11 km from Oviedo, 20 from Avilés and 22 from Gijón.
Festivals and gastronomy
In May come the festivals of San Isidro Labrador in Posada; in July, Los Exconxuraos —of recent invention but declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, commemorating the rebellion of the locals against the bishop of Oviedo’s steward— and Santiago Apóstol in Arlós and Pruvia. In August, the second weekend brings the fiestas del Cruce in Posada, and in Lugo de Llanera the Santa María festivals, culminating in the Lunes del Bollu (Bollo Monday). Carnival is very popular in Posada, and there are gastronomic days dedicated to cod (September) and to garden produce and carne roxa (August).
