What to see in Corvera de Asturias

The Trasona reservoir, known as the pantano de Tresona, is one of the most emblematic bodies of water in central Asturias and a regular venue for canoeing competitions. It is a national reference for rowing and canoeing thanks to the Trasona Sports Technification Centre, which hosted the European Canoeing Championship in the summer of 2010. Its shores are ideal for walking and outdoor sports.

The palace of the Rodríguez de León family, next to the Trasona dam, is one of the municipality’s most notable civil buildings. Extended over several periods, its interior is arranged around a central courtyard with Tuscan columns and a grand three-flight stone staircase. It was rented to Ensidesa for cultural and sporting purposes, including the canoeing club.

The church of Santa María de Solís, with a single nave, ribbed vault and side portico, keeps the Solís family crest and the tomb of Pedro Solís. Its baroque altarpiece comes from the vanished monastery of Santa María de la Vega. The church of Santa María de Cancienes is an extraordinary example of religious architecture, especially for the altarpieces it houses.

La Quinta de Silva Melero, from the early 20th century, stands out for its polygonal tower with a conical roof, decorated with reliefs of fantastic animals and topped with a spire. A gallery of windows separated by pillars opens on its side façade. The 18th-century Casa de Blanco, with its symmetrical façade and family crest, completes the municipality’s manorial architecture.

The chapel of Santos Justo y Pastor, in Solís, and the chapel of San Pelayo bear witness to the municipality’s religious history. In Nubledo stands the old town hall building, rectangular in plan with two floors, bearing the municipal crest on its façade. The El Escañorio natural area preserves ferns unique to their species.

Parque Astur, in Trasona, is the main leisure and shopping centre of the Avilés comarca. Together with the large industries established in the municipality —Ensidesa (now Arcelor), Fertiberia, Hiasa and the Dupont factory—, it reflects Corvera’s transformation from a farming municipality into an industrial and services town in the mid-20th century.

Getting there

It lies about 22 kilometres from Oviedo, 20 from Gijón and about 3 from the centre of Avilés, with whose conurbation Trasona, Las Vegas and Los Campos are integrated. Asturias Airport, in the neighbouring municipality of Castrillón, is about 16 kilometres away.
