Tineo, Asturias: municipality guide
Tineo is one of the largest municipalities in Asturias: 540.83 km² and 8,679 inhabitants (INE 2025) in the west of the region. Its capital is the town of Tineo, at 652 metres above sea level and declared a Historic Ensemble. The municipality is crossed by the Camino Primitivo, the oldest official Jacobean route to Santiago de Compostela, which had one of its historic stages at the monastery of Obona.
What to see in Tineo
The monastery of Santa María la Real de Obona, declared a National Monument on 14 May 1982, is the heritage jewel of the municipality. This Benedictine monastery was a centre of economic and cultural power in the Middle Ages and a key stage on the Camino Primitivo: King Alfonso IX issued and signed documents at the monastery and protected pilgrims on their way to Santiago. Its three-naved Romanesque church and the ruined Baroque cloister deserve an unhurried visit.

The town of Tineo, a Historic Ensemble, preserves an old town of traditional character with the Museum of Sacred Art as its cultural landmark. Its streets breathe the history of a town that was a crossroads: here the memory of General Riego is kept alive — he was born in nearby Tuña, declared an Exemplary Village of Asturias.

In Navelgas stands the Gold Museum, devoted to the Roman gold mining of the area, one of the most important in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. The municipality is also home to the Carbayón de Valentín, a monumental oak tree, and the Dolmen de Merías, evidence of human presence since prehistory.
Camino de Santiago: the Camino Primitivo, an official Jacobean route and UNESCO World Heritage Site, crosses the municipality of Tineo. Pilgrims coming from Oviedo pass through the municipality following one of the oldest and most demanding routes to Compostela, with the monastery of Obona as a historic landmark.
Getting there
The AS-216 and AS-217 roads are the main ways into the municipality. Tineo lies 65.4 kilometres from Oviedo, the capital of Asturias.
Festivals and gastronomy
The patronal festivals of San Roque, from 12 to 18 August and declared of Regional Tourist Interest in 1990, are the great summer event in Tineo. San Pedro is celebrated on 29 June, and on the last Sunday of July comes the Vaqueirada, declared of National Tourist Interest and shared with Aristébano. The calendar also includes the Feria del Chosco, the trade fair (Feria de Muestras), the San José livestock fair and the Virgen de la Caridad in Navelgas. On the table, the chosco —the municipality’s most emblematic cured sausage— rules, along with pote de berzas (cabbage stew) and the autumn amagüesto, with roast chestnuts and sweet cider.
