What to see in Caso
Caso is a municipality in central Asturias, in the comarca of Nalón and in the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains. With 307.8 km², its entire territory forms part of the Redes Natural Park, a biosphere reserve. It borders Piloña to the north, Ponga to the east, Aller and Sobrescobio to the west, and Maraña and Puebla de Lillo (León) to the south. Its capital is Campo de Caso (El Campu).
The Redes Natural Park is the great protagonist of the municipality: a territory of mountains, forests and valleys where the Nalón river rises, at Tarna. Among its most beautiful spots are Lake Ubales and the Los Arrudos route, the Deboyo cave and the Mongayo waterfall. The most emblematic peaks are Torres, at 2,104 metres, and Tiatordos.

Caso is an ideal destination for nature tourism: hiking routes such as Los Arrudos, contemplating high-mountain landscapes and discovering villages with traditional architecture are its main attractions. The forests, rivers and high pastures of Redes shelter a remarkable biodiversity, making the park a reference for birdwatching and nature photography.
The capital, Campo de Caso (El Campu), preserves the atmosphere of the Asturian mountains. The heritage of the municipality includes the bridge over the Nalón, of Roman origin; the collegiate church of Santa María la Real de Tanes, Renaissance and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument; and more than 52 hórreos (traditional Asturian granaries), a testament to traditional architecture.

Getting there
Caso is reached via the AS-117 road, the main route that runs through the Nalón valley and connects the municipality with the Nalón comarca and the rest of Asturias. The journey, among the forests and mountains of the Redes Natural Park, is already part of the experience of visiting Caso. The drive into Caso, climbing through the Nalón valley, offers spectacular views of the Cantabrian Mountains.

Festivals and gastronomy
The most notable celebration is the Certamen del Queso Casín (Casín Cheese Competition), declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Principality, held in Campo de Caso since 2015 in tribute to the municipality’s most emblematic cheese. The festive calendar includes the livestock fair, on 8 and 9 October; San Juan, on 24 June; San Pedro, on 29 June in Coballes; La Magdalena, on 22 July in Pendones; and El Cristo, on 14 September in Tanes. Traditional markets and cattle fairs keep the rural character of the municipality alive.
Gastronomy has its star in Casín cheese, documented since the 13th century, made with cow’s milk and with a strong, spicy flavour — one of the most characterful cheeses in Asturias.
