Gozón, Asturias: municipality guide

Gozón is a coastal municipality in central Asturias, in the Avilés comarca. Its capital is the fishing town of Luanco; it has 10,407 inhabitants (INE 2025) and covers 81.72 km².

What to see in Gozón

Cape Peñas. The municipality is home to Cape Peñas, the northernmost point of Asturias, with its lighthouse and spectacular cliffs over the Cantabrian Sea. Part of this coastline is integrated into the Paisaje Protegido del Cabo Peñas (Protected Landscape of Cape Peñas), an area of great natural and scenic value. The islands of Herbosa and del Carmen dot the sea off the coast. Nearby stands the Museo del Medio Marino del Cabo Peñas (Marine Environment Museum of Cape Peñas), set in a place of great beauty.

Luanco, the capital. A fishing town with a port, Santa María beach and Santa María church. Its old town preserves the flavor of the fishing tradition and is the center of the municipality’s life, as well as one of the most appreciated tourist destinations on the central Asturian coast.

The church of Santa María de Luanco. The town’s parish church, declared a cultural heritage asset, is the municipality’s most outstanding temple and one of Luanco’s symbols.

The Maritime Museum of Asturias. Based in Luanco, it is one of the most visited museums in Asturias. Its collections bear witness to the region’s rich maritime heritage and the municipality’s historic link with the sea.

The church of San Jorge de Manzaneda. Romanesque in style and declared a cultural heritage asset, it is one of the jewels of the municipality’s medieval heritage, set in a charming rural environment.

The Clock Tower. Built in 1705 and also used as a jail, it is one of Luanco’s most unique historic buildings and a testament to the town’s civil history.

Getting there

The main roads are the AS-238 Avilés-Luanco, which also serves Asturias Airport, located in Castrillón about 25 km from Luanco. The AS-329 connects Luanco with Candás. Gozón has no railway: the nearest is in Carreño, on the Ferrol-Gijón line. The municipality borders the Cantabrian Sea to the north, Corvera de Asturias to the south, Avilés to the west and Carreño to the east.

Festivals and gastronomy

On the first weekend of March the Festival del Oricio (Sea Urchin Festival) is held in Bañugues, dedicated to the sea urchin. In mid-July, the Carmen festivities include mass on the quay and a maritime procession of the Virgin, and the bonito gastronomic days take place that month. In June the San Pedro festivities are held in Antromero, and in August those of San Bartolomé. At the end of July the original Luanco beach tennis tournament is played on the beach, and on the first Sunday of September the Grandes Fiestas de San Martín de Cardo take place, with their traditional Gran costillada.
