Vegadeo, Asturias: municipality guide

Vegadeo —A Veiga in Asturian and in Galician-Asturian— is a municipality in western Asturias, on the beautiful Eo estuary and right on the scenic border with Galicia: 3,928 inhabitants (INE 2025) on 82.75 km². Its capital is the town of Vegadeo. The Camino del Norte, an official Jacobean route, touches the municipality at its border with Galicia.

What to see in Vegadeo

The Vegadeo town hall, a 19th-century historicist building with its clock tower, presides over the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and is the symbol of the town. Around it, the old town keeps the air of the trading towns of the Eo, with arcades and manor houses, and the estuary shapes a landscape where the river meets the Cantabrian Sea.

The Suarón river waters the municipality before joining the Eo; on its banks stands the mazo de Meredo, an old water-powered forge that speaks of the area’s industrial past. The Eo estuary, on the northern edge, is a natural area of great value, with marshes and birdlife.

The religious heritage is led by the church of San Esteban de Piantón, from the 12th century, with its medieval stone bridge over the Suarón, and the parish church of Vegadeo, 19th-century historicist and dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The tour is completed by the casona de Lastra in Vijande, the Cruz de Paramios and the Fábrica de Cueros, founded in 1823 and a witness to the municipality’s traditional industry.

Camino de Santiago: the Camino del Norte, an official Jacobean route and UNESCO World Heritage Site, touches the municipality at its border with Galicia, on the Santiago de Abres–Vegadeo–Trabada stretch.

Getting there

The A-8 motorway (exit 501) and the N-640 road are the main ways in. Vegadeo is a stone’s throw from Galicia, separated from the Lugo municipality of Trabada by the river Eo. The Camino del Norte, which touches the municipality at its border with Galicia, also brings pilgrims on foot to Vegadeo.

Festivals and gastronomy

The main festivals are those of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and San Roque, in August. The festive calendar includes Santa Marina in Meredo, Santiago and Santa Ana in Abres (July), San Román del Monte in Piantón and the Feria de Muestras (trade fair) in the second week of June. There is a weekly market every Saturday, and the Holy Week of Piantón has its own tradition.
